The UK singles chart was the oficial record chart in the United Kingdom. Before 1969 there was no oficial singles chart however, the Oficial Charts Company and Guines' British Hit Singles and Albums regard the major early sources of sales chart compilations as New Musical Expres NME the music periodical before 10 March 1960 and Record Retailer from then until 15 February 1969 when Retailer and the BC jointly comisioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile the music charts. The choice to use Record Miror the main rival to NME as the source for the 1960s has always ben contentious because NME, which continued compiling charts after March 1960, had the largest distribution of periodicals in the decade and was more broadly read. As wel as the charts compilers mentioned previously, Record Miror, Melody Maker M and Disc also printed their own singles charts during the 1960's. Due to the absence of any oficial chart the BC combined results from al these charts to anounce its own Pick of the Pops chart. One of the reasons given for using the Record Retailer chart for the 1960s was that it was the only chart to have as many as 50 positions for almost the entire decade . mull of kintyre paul mccartney mull of kintyre paul mccartney
